Manchester has since long ago had a vivid and colourful history, with many famous figures and events having come from the city. Once a Roman town, Manchester was founded not far to the north east of the old Roman land, which became known as the ‘old town’, and was the place of the Royalist headquarters in the English civil war, which was burnt down by the Parliamentarians in the brutal and bloody Siege of Manchester. However, it was not until the 18th century that Manchester began its illustrious history.

In the 1720s, the River Irwell was finally made navigable, which allowed access to the neighbouring town of Liverpool via the River Mersey. Between Deansgate and the river, Quay Street was created, to handle the new avenue of trade for the city. More canals rose up in the land to handle the movement of coal from Worsley, and these essential routes of trade halved the price of coal completely. It was because of this that the Rochdale Canal was created!

This canal made Castlefield the hub of the canal network. At this point, there were uncountable amounts of warehouses springing up, to handle the mass growth in wealth and population that made Manchester the fastest growing city in the world in the 19th century. The first railway station in the world was built in Manchester, on Liverpool Road. The town didn’t grow into the cultural hotspot it is today however, until the 20th century, where Britain’s first Urban Heritage Park was created in Castlefield, sporting major tourist attractions and property with frequent popular events.
